Hey Ya, Cryptophiles!
Happy New Year from all (six) of us at Crypto Central.
We waited awhile for our first post of 2007 because we were busy compiling our own list of accolades from the "Best of 2006" lists -- and you know how many of those there are out there. Suffice it to say, if this were the Academy Awards, Nels Cline would be Best Actor, Myra Melford Best Actress, Jenny Scheinman and our own Fearless Leader Jeff Gauthier Best Supporting Actress and Actor (respectively). Erik Friedlander and Ben Goldberg would get Best Score and Bennie Maupin would be getting a Lifetime Achievement honor. Best Picture, unfortunately, would still be Crash.
So here's the list. Read it and weep for joy:

First off, we'd like to NOT thank the Academy and instead thank all of the critics, fans, discenring audiophiles, bloggers, record stores (esp. the brave jazz buyers) and any other "out cats" out there who we've missed for helping to keep our little weird-jazz concern alive. Big ups to y'all.
BUT WAIT...
...that's not all. The current issue of Jazz Times magazine not only has a good review of Nels Cline's Andrew Hill tribute New Monastery, it also features an article written by Nels (mentioned on the cover!) on what Andrew Hill's music meant to him growing up. It's called "Dedication: Nels Cline Pays Tribute to Andrew Hill" and you can pick it up on discerning newsstand near you.
And if that isn't enough "Nelsalia" for ye, a cool music blog called IckMusic (it's run by a good guy named Pete Icke, hence the "ick") recently conducted an extensive interview with Nels. It's quite an illuminating chat, and a good intro to the worlds of avant-garde and creative music for the newbie. Pass it along to your friends!
And lastly but no leastly, in March Crypto artists will be traveling to NYC for a weeklong label showcase in New York City at the famed Jazz Standard club (March 26 - April 1, 2007).
Here is the current schedule, subject to change:
March 26 – The Jeff Gauthier Goatette with Nels and Alex Cline
March 27 - Scott Amendola Band with Nels Cline and Jenny Scheinman
March 28 - Myra Melford and Be Bread with Cuong Vu and Brandon Ross
March 29 & 30 - Nels Cline and Friends Play the Music of Andrew Hill
March 31 & April 1 – The Bennie Maupin Ensemble
That's it for now, kids. Stay tuned for an upcoming blog post that will give you an EXCLUSIVE BEHIND-THE-SCENES look at the recent recording sessions in Calabasas for the new Nels Cline Singers CD!
