Greetings and salutations, Crypto-philes....We're still coming down from the ear-stretching evening of music of our last Thursday's Cryptonight concert to celebrate the 50th Birthday of our very own bass-man Steuart Liebig. It's safe to say that the Club Tropical was stuffed to it's rafters for the two-set show, which was kicked off with a 20-minute workout of "The Darkness of Each End's Fall" featuring a postively psychotic guitar attack from Sir Nels Cline, who left the stage afterwards drenched in sweat and in search of a soothing Negro Modelo. After that came "Flare Up Like Flame and Create Dark Shadows," which pretty much described what avant-garde Poo-Bah Vinny Golia did on his sopranino saxophone. The organist Wayne Peet stepped up for a new mini-concerto "The Shimmering Light of Each Assent" -- all the while the birthday boy drew double duty conducting the band furiously AND wailing on his contrabassguitar. The second set was devoted to two newer pieces written for the Grand Goatette: "Capricorn" and "Transformer" featured extended solos from respectively Fearless Leader Jeff Gauthier and pianist David Witham. All 'n' all a banner avant-garde party that we hated to see end. But hey, each new week brings a new Cryptonight, so if you missed this one there's always another just around the corner.
In further Crytpo news, All About Jazz's Elliott Simon just published a nice review of the Ben Goldberg Quintet's the door, the hat, the chair, the fact, which you can read here: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=21929
That's all for now. Take care, be-ware and keep your ear to the Underground.
